Hillshade

A hillshade (also called relief shading) is a visual representation of elevation differences in terrain. It is calculated from a Digital Surface Model (DSM/DOM) or a Digital Terrain Model (DTM/DGM) and delivered as a raster image.

By simulating illumination and shading, terrain structures become much easier to interpret. This helps to quickly identify features such as slopes, ridges, depressions, valleys, and other topographic patterns. Depending on the purpose, the hillshade can be tuned to emphasize fine details or broader landforms.

Hillshades are widely used in cartography, planning, environmental analysis, and visualizations because they make elevation models easier to read and communicate.
